The Claygate Clubhouse
The CRGT is fundraising to rebuild and improve the Claygate Clubhouse after it was destroyed by fire in November 2016.
The original Claygate Clubhouse opened in 2012 and was the result of a major fundraising campaign involving Claygate Cricket Club, Claygate Royals FC, the CRGT, Claygate Parish Council, the local Claygate community and Elmbridge Borough Council. The new facility quickly became an integral part of village life for the entire community and was a focal point on the Rec that The Trust, both clubs and the community were all incredibly proud of. The opening of a café within the clubhouse only enhanced the facility’s success and was enjoyed by the community at large.
The opportunity to make improvements to the original design became apparent in the aftermath of the 2016 fire as the CRGT could now address issues concerning security and space that it had experienced during the clubhouse’s four-year existence. These improvements include replacing the flat roofs on either side of the building to solve the ongoing security challenge, new disabled access and building a larger kitchen area. The overwhelming success of a café facility on The Rec highlighted the need for this area to be improved significantly to cater for demand. Most importantly, re-designing the roof will allow the major improvement of adding a first floor space with an additional 95sqm of space, allowing the café more space downstairs with the addition of a community space/club room upstairs. The CRGT believes this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build a lasting legacy on The Rec with a community clubhouse for all and will significantly extend the potential use of the building.
The CRGT believes the benefits of a new improved clubhouse are:
For the Community: A new space for a variety of activities such as Pilates Classes, meetings (book reading club, Club AGM’s), ante/post natal groups, chair based exercise classes for the elderly for which we have had many requests for use, but no space!
For the CRGT: A new income stream for the CRGT to develop to help pay for the ongoing costs of this community facility. The CRGT has received no increase in grant since 2005 and relies heavily on fund raising, support from the community and funding applications. The increase in potential use thanks to the new clubhouse space will help the CRGT develop new income opportunities.
For Claygate Cricket Club: A separate clubroom for matches instead of previously using the same space as the café, often meaning members of the public were unable to access the café’s facilities. It will also allow larger meetings and social events to take place in the new room. This will also benefit bar sales, which is the principal source of income for the cricket club.
For the Claygate Royals FC: An expanded facility for football club members – since the Clubhouse was opened in 2012 it has seen membership grow to more than 500 active players.
For the Café: More seating space downstairs and (with the move of the bar upstairs) the kitchen space can be doubled to improve food preparation with more storage.
Rebuilding the Claygate Clubhouse updates:
As of January 2018, the CRGT has raised more than £190,000 thanks to local community donations, fundraising events and grants to help pay for the extra cost of improvements. The CRGT is now working closely with Elmbridge BC and Kier, the appointed builders for the rebuild project, with construction to begin later this year.
