What A Summer It's Been!
July is always an exciting month in Claygate and this one has been no different; the Claygate 5 Mile run saw almost 400 competitors of all ages compete. Our congratulations to them as well as the organisers and marshals of the event. They did another fantastic job, keeping the runners safe and on the right track. Where would we be without them?
The run was closely followed by the Annual Claygate Flower and Village Show with the Recreation Ground welcoming over 4,500 visitors from Claygate and beyond. Thankfully the weather was set fair and our visitors enjoyed the multitude of events both inside and outside the main Marquee. Especially popular was the Gin and Prosecco tent! Our thanks and appreciation go to the huge team of volunteers who make this event such a great success every year and a special thanks go to Bonnie and Barry Fitzpatrick who, after many years of ‘fronting’ the show, have decided that they will take a slightly less stressful role in future. I have no doubt though that their guiding hands will still be on the tiller. Thanks Barry and Bonnie, you deserve a rest!
Time doesn’t stop for long in Claygate and the very next day saw the return of the Gig on the Rec, yet another popular Claygate event now in its 9th year can you believe. This year the Gig was organised by a new team of volunteers under the umbrella of Claygate Village Association who raised a substantial amount which will go towards community projects. The event entertained an audience of almost 700, the largest audience so far, who enjoyed anthems and favourites of the mid 90’s by the likes of Blur, Oasis, Pulp and Suede, all played brilliantly by the band ‘Britpop Reunion’. Again our sincere thanks go to the new team of organisers who made this one of the most successful Gigs thus far. The ‘Gigs’ were originally organised by Claygate Cricket Club, with the first in 2010, as a fundraiser for the Pavilion. They ran the first 4 events before putting the event in the very capable hands Claygate Royals Football Club led by Tony Shearman who expanded the Gig over the next 4 years.
Finally, the Trust would like to welcome a new Trustee, Sam Ahmed, who has taken over the role of Treasurer from Brian Hornsby who has stepped down due to other commitments. (Huge thanks go to Brian for guiding us through the past two years, they have been very challenging!) Sam who lives in Cobham with his family brings with him a wealth of experience from his time working in the City, and is more than capable of guiding the Trust through a very busy year ahead. Glad to have you on board Sam!
CLUBHOUSE LATEST: PLANNING APPROVED. READY FOR LIFT OFF!
The CRGT are delighted to announce that the Planning Application for a two-storey sports pavilion with associated decking, and hard standing, along with the plans for landscaping on both sides of the new pavilion has been permitted by Elmbridge Borough Council (EBC) following a meeting of the East Area Planning committee on 15th July 2019. The application had the full backing of local councillors.
The planning application was originally registered by the Claygate Recreation Ground Trust, with Elmbridge Borough Council on the 19th March 2019 following almost 2 1/2 years of planning, discussion, and negotiation with EBC.
Damian Ross (CRGT Communications Trustee) commented: “We are at last on the final part of our journey to a new Community Clubhouse that should be ready for all to enjoy in Spring 2020. It has been a long and drawn out affair and it cannot be underestimated just how much work and effort the Trustees, who are all volunteers, and the Community, have put into planning and fundraising for the new Clubhouse. The old clubhouse was only opened in May 2012 but it very quickly became an important focal point for the community as well as being the home of Claygate Cricket Club and Claygate Royals Football Club. Its return is eagerly anticipated by all’’
Mayfair Construction won the tender to carry out the work of making the clubhouse safe and have done an excellent job. Damage to the recreation ground was kept to a minimum despite the heavy rain experienced prior to commencement, and Claygate Cricket Club were able to fulfil their Senior and Junior matches, as well as continuing to provide coaching and training sessions for the 180 Juniors club members.
Now that planning approval has been granted, EBC will need to approve the Tender documents, this should be a formality, and the CRGT project team can then go out to tender with a view to approving the successful bidder in early October prior to the build starting in early November and completing in spring 2020. What a journey it has been!
The success of this project is in no small part due to the leadership and hard work of the Chairman of the CRGT, Helen Maguire, and the CRGT are delighted to announce that Helen was awarded the Institute of Fundraising ‘Rising Star’ award at the 2019 National Fundraising Awards held on the 1st July. This prestigious national award was for the Clubhouse Rebuild Capital Appeal.
After the ceremony Helen commented: “I’m delighted with this Award but would not have received this without the hard work and dedication of the amazing 30 strong Fundraising Team that put so much time and effort into helping the Trust raise the funds needed to rebuild the Clubhouse. Because of the time constraints given to the CRGT, the team had the unenviable task of raising £190K in just 6 months but then went on to almost double that within a year raising a staggering £360K. What a fantastic achievement that was.’’

The CRGT is looking for a new catering contractor to run a community café inside the Claygate Community Clubhouse. The new café will be able to offer a full cafe/deli menu as well as occasional event catering for 40 covers on the ground floor, 60 in the new upstairs community space as well as room outdoors for another 60.
