Cricket

Cricket has been played on Claygate Recreation Ground since 1935 when Claygate Cricket Club made the grounds its official home. The Club itself has been around since 1885. It is a strong community-based club with over 60 senior and over 150 junior members spanning ages 7– 70.

Most recently, in 2021, the Club moved into the state-of-the-art Claygate Pavilion having spent 4 years operating out of portacabins; the previous pavilion was destroyed by a fire in 2016.

The Club has the use of the main square with 11 grass strips, 2 artificial wickets and two practice nets.

The club strives for a friendly and social atmosphere for players, parents, supporters and visitors. BBQs are held regularly on match days and training days. They also be holding a number of social events during the year with an annual cricket week taking place in the last week of July. A number of junior and adult matches are played against local clubs and are followed by family BBQs afterwards.

Cricket Adult Section

There are competitive 1st XI league fixtures and Social XI matches on Saturday afternoons as well as friendly fixtures on Sunday afternoons. The Club also plays a range of adult fixtures on Bank Holidays and midweek evenings in competitive and friendly 20/20 matches.

Since 2018 Claygate Cricket 1st XI have played in the Shepherd Neame Surrey County League with the side currently playing in Division Three and will be aiming for promotion to Division Two in the 2023 season.

The club introduced a Social XI in 2022 and the side consists of adult players returning to cricket as well as some of the older teenage boys (U15+) who are transitioning into adult cricket. The side plays 8 to 10 short format matches (T20 or T25) each season. All matches are home games and are followed by a BBQ at the club with families encouraged to participate.

The Sunday friendly side is a mix of youth and experience, priding themselves in nurturing some of the juniors through their first taste of senior cricket.

Cricket Junior Section

Over the last 12 years, Claygate Cricket Club has invested heavily in its junior sides. The junior teams play competitive cricket in the Surrey Junior Cricket Championship.

We offer Junior cricket for both boys and girls. Our ECB All Stars and Dynamos programmes, for children aged 5 to 11, is a fun and enjoyable introduction to cricket for new players. The age group sides run from U10 upwards,

The juniors begin each season in January with indoor nets before moving onto the Rec when weather permits. The training sessions are run by professional coaches.

In season, the Club has junior cricket activities 5 days a week.
